| InterBase Frequently Asked Questions |
General QuestionsWhat types of applications is InterBase used for?InterBase is designed for use in a wide variety of applications from scalable ERP and CRM systems to single-user applications to deep embedded applications requiring no maintenance. InterBase is a reliable, secure, highly scalable database for embedded applications on UNIX, Linux, Windows and Mac OS X systems. The blasingly fast, small footprint database engine requires near-zero administration, ideal for business-critical applications. InterBase installs in less that 60MB and requires less than 5M of RAM to operate making it an ideal RDBMS for operation in medical devices, emergency response systems and portable devices of all kinds. What are the highlights of InterBase?InterBase is designed to offer additional durability, exceptional performance, security and support for internationalized applications. The highlights include:
Which InterBaseEdition is right for me?InterBase editions enable developers to build an amazing array of applications. Check out this page to determine which InterBase edition is right for your business. If my application is 32-bit, why would I want to use a 64-bit DBMS server like InterBase XE?InterBase XE can take advantage of larger memory cache and more CPUs, possibly boosting performance of queries executed from 32-bit applications. Upgrading to a 64-bit InterBase XE data server allows a larger virtual address space which lends itself to accepting/servicing more connections. Also, any processing that requires more memory (thread stack size for recursive queries, larger database cache, larger SORT buffers) would benefit from a 64-bit server. Where can I get a 64-bit ODBC driver for InterBase? The Easysoft ODBC-InterBase Driver lets ODBC-enabled applications access local or remote InterBase databases and is available in both 64-bit and 32-bit versions. What problems might be encountered when using a 64-bit DBMS server with a 32-bit application?Custom UDF libraries will need to be rebuilt and tested with 64-bit compilers and InterBase XE 64-bit. This may require getting updated UDF libraries from third-party vendors. Embarcadero delivers our ib_udf library in both 32-bit and 64-bit binaries. Why is a separate license required for encryption?US regulations monitor products that include 128-bit AES encryption. To ensure our ability to comply with US regulations, we activate the Strong Encryption capability of InterBase via a serial number key. InterBase XE and InterBase SMP 2009 with Strong Encryption can be sold to customers worldwide under the unrestricted status provisions of the "ENC" export license exemption. Under ENC rules, export licenses are not required. The export control classification number (ECCN) is 5D002 - ENC/Unrestricted. If you create a project that makes use of the AES encryption features of InterBase, your country may have regulations that apply to the export of your product. In that event, the ability to enable Strong Encryption via our serial number key may simplify your compliance with your country's export regulations. There is no additional charge for InterBase encryption capability. Which platforms are supported by InterBase?InterBaseServer Edition supports deployment on Windows, LINUX and Solaris.
