Challenge 1
Database Monitor

Use DBArtisan's Database Monitor to find and then kill an offending process that is blocking other transactions or locking an object in less than 2½ minutes.

Sound Check

Before starting the challenge make sure that you download and install DBArtisan. Then run the Datasource Registration Wizard. The Wizard will help you register any DB2, Oracle, Sybase or SQL Server connections.

Please note: The connection information only needs to be set up one time for each database and can be saved locally or in a common catalogue for use by other Embarcadero products.
The Challenge starts NOW.

  1. Open the "Database Monitor".
  2. Click on any of the rows (processes) listed. You will see the actual code in the window at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Click on the Blocking Locks tag.
  4. Right-click on the offending process and "kill" the thread.
Stop the clock! You are done.

The estimated time for completing this Challenge is 2 1/2 minutes, depending on database size.

Playback

The Database Monitor is a real-time troubleshooting kit that displays all processes connected to the server. It's all on one screen, easy to read, understand and traverse, so you can quickly scan databases for potential performance problems.

Rock On

To test out more of its extensive capabilities try clicking on Mem Usage or CPU Time or I/O columns to reveal and sort through the processes from high to low to reveal a memory, CPU or I/O hog.
