ER/Studio - Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions

Which version is right for me?

ER/Studio XE is the perfect solution for organizations that require a collaborative modeling environment or have a need for process modeling, data modeling, application modeling and reporting in a powerful multi-level design environment. Designed for the enterprise, it provides all the tools needed to diagnose and understand the impact of changes, promote data reuse, and effectively communicate models and metadata across teams and departments. ER/Studio Data Architect is the stand-alone version for users only looking for data modeling. ER/Studio Business Architect is the stand-alone version for users only looking for business process modeling.

How does ER/Studio help me manage and control growth in data?

ER/Studio offers model-driven analysis of database objects with a clear separation between logical and physical layers. This allows a clear representation of data structures regardless of the implementation-specific optimizations on the physical layer. By leveraging the separation of logical and physical models, redundant data can be consolidated. Users can also leverage ER/Studio's reusability features and collaboration support to effectively work in teams and ensure consistency across their environment.

Can I leverage ER/Studio to improve data quality?

Yes. ER/Studio allows users to create reusable objects to foster standardization throughout the infrastructure. This ensures that data is consistent across different systems. In addition, ER/Studio provides a view of the "as is" data so users can look at data patterns. Users can leverage this knowledge to standardize data, ease integration between systems, and resolve potential data quality issues.

How would an ER/Studio modeling solution help increase user productivity?

ER/Studio provides an intuitive and easy-to-use interface that significantly reduces the time needed for users to become productive. ER/Studio users benefit from significant productivity gains through the advanced reusability features, the ability to import and export metadata from different systems, and the excellent graphic capabilities of the product.

How does ER/Studio support the use/reuse of metadata throughout the enterprise?

ER/Studio complies with the leading industry standards for metadata and modeling notations. This enables reusability of the metadata as well as integration with different applications. ER/Studio models can be imported and exported in standards-based formats for reuse in such applications as SOA, BPM, UML, business analytics, and integration products.

Does ER/Studio provide any benefits to non-users of the product (i.e. executive management and business managers)?

Yes. ER/Studio can facilitate communication with non-users of the product by publishing data models and metadata directly to a corporate Intranet or Web site for review by executive management or business managers. Users can also access metadata through the ER/Studio Repository. This data can be repurposed for use in other enterprise systems and reports.

How does ER/Studio facilitate SOA implementations?

With ER/Studio, you can export XML schemas and generate XSD from both logical and physical models. This allows for the re-use of existing metadata and ensures corporate standards are enforced.

How does ER/Studio Business Architect work with ER/Studio Data Architect?

ER/Studio Business Architect (formerly named EA/Studio) offers an import/export bridge to ER/Studio, allowing you to import data models into ER/Studio Business Architect. You can then create relationships between the entities and attributes from your data model and ER/Studio Business Architect business processes, business units, and stewards. You can also export conceptual data models created in ER/Studio Business Architect to ER/Studio as the foundation for logical and physical models.

What is the BPMN standard?

The Business Process Modeling Notation (BPMN) is an open standard developed by the Object Management Group (OMG) as a graphical notation to depict the steps in a business process. It is designed to be intuitive to the business community (using many common flowcharting shapes, for example), yet robust enough to allow for code generation (via BPEL, for example). ER/Studio Business Architect provides full support for process modeling that adheres to the BPMN.

How does ER/Studio Business Architect compare with a BPM Vendor or Suite like IDS Scheer, Pegasystems, Lombardi, etc.?

ER/Studio Business Architect is a lightweight business modeling tool that addresses process modeling (BPA) and conceptual modeling and its relationship to data. The core of ER/Studio Business Architect is in helping data modelers and business users communicate better. Focused BPM tools focus more on the execution, simulation, and metrics associated with business process management.

How does ER/Studio Business Architect compare with EA vendors like Telelogic (Popkin) System Architect?

A: ER/Studio Business Architect provides a focused subset of a full enterprise architecture, offering deep functionality in the data modeling, process modeling, and the interrelationships between process and data. EA vendors tend to have light coverage in a broader range of areas, including assets, network, etc. For customers focused on data and process, we offer an easier-to-use solution, with a lower price tag, and robust functionality in the area in which we choose to focus.

How does ER/Studio Business Architect compare with a drawing tool like Visio?

In addition to diagramming capabilities, ER/Studio Business Architect captures meta-data associated with business processes. This allows users the capability to model the relationships between business processes and data models, and to export information into a variety of formats, including HTML, .PDF, Excel, ER/Studio, etc.
