Appmethod software development platform makes it easy to build connected apps for IoT wearables,
gadgets, devices, sensors and cloud services

SAN FRANCISCO – January 2, 2015 – Embarcadero Technologies, a leading provider of software solutions for application and database development, is featuring the Philips Hue Lux connected home lighting system in this week's “Developing the Internet of Things (IoT) Showcase.” Philips Hue Lux is a smart home automation lighting solution which is comprised of four components: Apps, Bridge, Portal and Lights. The system is controlled via a multi-device connected app or indirectly through interaction with an IoT solution from any Windows, Mac OSX, iOS, Android tablet or smartphone.

IoT is opening up exciting opportunities for innovative solution development in home automation and personal wireless lighting. Developers using Appmethod can quickly and easily build their own multi-device applications that connect light control to IoT solutions. Appmethod’s REST components can be used to communicate with and control IoT devices like the Hue Lux bulbs that use web services over a REST API, with a multi-device connected application. With Appmethod, developers can focus on application logic, without having to 'reinvent the wheel' to implement IoT and multi-device integration to a connected app.

The Philips Hue Lux connected home lighting system includes smart bulbs and a bridge that connects to a local network. The system comprises the following four components:

  • Apps: this is how a user directly controls the light. With Appmethod, developers can build their own app and tie in light control to the ecosystem of IoT.
  • Bridge: this is the control box that serves the REST API. It communicates between the connected app and the lights it manages, via a local network connection. Each bridge can support up to 50 Hue Lux lights.
  • Portal: this is a web-based control panel used to configure the bridge.
  • Lights: Philips Hue Lux light bulbs are controlled by the bridge. They use the ZigBee Light Link standard.

The Appmethod REST Debugger is built on top of the Embarcadero REST Library, which is a framework for accessing REST-based web services. The REST Debugger is capable of generating REST components, providing developers with a convenient, fast, and powerful approach to prototyping and building REST integration and functionality into applications.

The Appmethod Blog is an online resource for developers building connected apps for IoT solutions. The latest post provides a demo featuring Appmethod and the REST Debugger to create native multi-device applications that interface with the Philips Hue Lux Starter Kit over REST.
