Appmethod software development platform makes it easy to build connected apps
for IoT wearables, gadgets, devices, sensors and cloud services

SAN FRANCISCO – January 22, 2015 – Embarcadero Technologies, a leading provider of software solutions for application and database development, is featuring the Misfit Shine Fitness and Sleep Monitor in this week's “Developing the Internet of Things (IoT) Showcase.” The Misfit Shine is a wearable device that tracks the users’ activity (walking, biking swimming, distance travelled), as well as sleep duration and quality, and synchronizes that biometric data to a Windows, OS X, iOS, or Android computer, smartphone, tablet or device.

The IoT marketplace is presenting new software application development opportunities for the growing trend of wearable fitness and personal health devices. For devices that use OAuth2.0 to handle authentication, such as Misfit Shine, a connected app is required for the user to provide credentials and permission to access their data from the REST API. With the Appmethod software development platform, developers can quickly and easily build multi-device, connected apps using REST components to communicate with and control IoT devices that use web services over a REST API. Developers don’t have to code low level processes to handle REST calls. Appmethod’s components do all the heavy lifting which allows developers to focus on what counts; building the application.

IoT wearables serve as a new bridge to information stored on the Internet. Information flows both ways over this ‘bridge’: by passively recording information and uploading it to the Internet by way of a connected app, and by receiving ‘push’ notifications from the Internet and presenting that information to the user. Most wearables typically have some kind of sensor, such as a camera or an accelerometer (which is the case for the Misfit Shine), which allows biometric data to be constantly collected. This data can then be used to inform a wide variety of IoT consumer and business applications. From fitness industry applications, to health and medical insurance, IoT is opening up new and exciting opportunities for software development innovation. Some examples of software applications for wearables include:

  • Apps to keep doctors and medical staff informed of your personal health with up to the minute bio-informatic data;
  • Apps to measure caloric consumption which can inform the type/size of dinner that you should eat;
  • If you are not sleeping enough, apps can control smart lights which can dim to remind you to get into bed a little earlier; and
  • Entertainment apps where a character in a video game can be ‘powered up’ when fitness levels are achieved.

The Appmethod Blog is an online resource for developers building connected apps for IoT solutions. The latest post provides a demo explaining how to build a multi-device application that connects to and displays biometric information from the Misfit Shine Fitness and Sleep Monitor. This includes steps to authenticate both the user and application over Oauth2.0 and then to consume Misfit data over a RESTful API.
